July 4 2025 - Quarter 1 Portfolio Update
The ASL Market Research Club's virtual portfolio update covers performance and investment highlights from April 4, 2025, to July 4, 2025.
The portfolio appreciated by 28.17%, outperforming the S&P 500, which gained 23.75%.
June 28 2025 – Update by Neel Dandekar ('27)
Since the last portfolio update on May 30, 2025, through June 28, 2025, the S&P 500 has increased by 4.42%. During the same period, our portfolio value rose from $121,919.23 to $127,506.83, a gain of 4.58%.
In the first couple of weeks following the May 30 update, we were heavily invested in the iShares India 50 (INDY) ETF. This investment was made in an effort to further diversify our portfolio within a market that has shown strong growth. We significantly leveraged this position in an attempt to amplify returns, as seen in the $86,234.67 of debt taken on at the time of the previous portfolio update. However, this also increased our losses during the initial phase. We eventually sold the ETF on June 16, 2025. Following our sale, the ETF continued to rise, as seen in the image.
In the latter half of the month, we identified Peloton (PTON) as an investment opportunity after its 11.69% decline from June 16 to June 17, 2025. In the days that followed, Peloton appreciated, which helped our portfolio achieve its goal of outperforming the S&P 500.
May 30 2025 – Update by Samir Sarkar ('27)
Over the past few weeks, members have continued to discuss global trade tensions as well as prospective new trade deals. Since the last market update on May 5, 2025, through May 30, 2025, the S&P 500 appreciated 4.63%. During the same period, our portfolio value increased from $116,105.97 to $121,919.23, a gain of 5.01%.
May 5, 2025 – Update by Neel Dandekar ('27)
Despite market volatility, our portfolio demonstrated resilience over the past few weeks. We continued discussing the implications of tariffs and major political events affecting the global economy. However, due to ongoing market and geopolitical volatility, we decided to liquidate the vast majority of our portfolio. Since April 4, 2025, our portfolio has returned 16.11%, compared to the S&P 500's 11.36% over the same period.
April 3, 2025 – Update by Neel Dandekar ('27)
We created our club’s portfolio and made our first trades. Club members discussed promising potential investments. Using the GAMS method along with other key financial metrics, members explained their thoughts on various stocks. Our initial trades included Coinbase (COIN), Shopify (SHOP), Peloton (PTON), and the VanEck Digital India ETF (DGIN). After this, we revisited Tesla (TSLA), a highly volatile stock affected by political events. Members expressed mixed sentiments, but the majority voted to buy the stock.
March 28, 2025 – Update by Neel Dandekar ('27)
Samir Sarkar ('27) recommended an investment in Dell Technologies (DELL). Using the GAMS method which was developed during our meeting, he explained its strong financials over the last few quarters and mentioned that its commitment to cloud infrastructure makes it an undervalued stock.
